Waking up at 5am (during winter) in the desert freezing for your friendly neighborhood Chicano from Califas. My girlfriend and I set out a goal to be at the Chagollas Garden by sunrise. We made it! My girlfriend took this amazing shot of me which is one of my favorite portraits - I love the composition because it reminds me of one of the portraits taken by my favorite female photographer, Graciela Iturbide.
Refugees of Fear and Genocide
Institutional racism was rooted since the beginning when these lands were stolen. The police originates from slave patrols and the black community have been refugees of fear and genocide for more than four centuries. The system isn't broken, we need to break it. Anti-blackness exists in every community not just white communities. Invite people in vs calling them out because not being a racist is not enough. Learn how to become an ally. Learn to become anti-racist. Reforming the police is not enough. Abolish the police. Abolish prisons. Otherwise mass incarceration and systematic oppression will continue to exist. I am not black so I cannot speak on behalf of the black community, the intention behind this message is for those who've seen anti-blackness in their current spaces but stay silent. Please don't. Their cause is our cause. There is no liberation of any marginalized community without the liberation of the black community. Thank you for reading.
Mi abuelo: El Mariachi

Don Ramiro. Papá Ramiro. El mariachi. Mi favorito documentación del año: mi abuelo de parte de mi papá. Nacido en Contla, Jalisco y viviendo en Tamazula por más de mitad de su vida donde formó su nido y familia, mi abuelo se dedicó tocando la vihuela en un grupo de Mariachi - el mariachi de tamazula.

Viajo no solo por todo Mexico pero a otros países incluyendo los Estados Unidos en La Casa Blanca (donde tocó adentro) hasta el teatro Olympia de Paris. Toco y acompañó algunos artistas más reconocidos de Mexico incluyendo a Juan Gabriel, Maria De Lourdes, y Lola Beltran para mencionar pocos. El traje que tiene puesto en esta fotografía fue regalado por su buen amiga Maria De Lourdes. Cuando le pregunté que como se sentía en su traje de charro me respondió con una sonrisa, “me siento de quince.”

Primera ves que yo fui al Hollywood Palladium en Los Angeles, yo tenia como unos 21 años a ver mi favorita banda Deftones sin saber la historia y conexión personal que tengo en mi sangre con el Hollywood Palladium atraves de mi abuelo. Descubrí unos años después que mi abuelo toco ahí hace años en un evento de fiestas mexicana de artesanía. Se me hace crazy pensar que mi abuelo toco en ambientes donde los Beatles, Morrissey, Vicente Fernández, Chavela Vargas, Café Tacvba han tocado para mencionar pocos. A parte de la sesión de fotografía estoy trabajando en un proyecto tipo documental con mi abuelo.

Inspired by of all of the efforts that went into the walkouts - meeting young students mobilizing and organizing me movió. Seeing madres chingonas marchando with their kids in strollers and elders marching against the systems of power that excludes, incarcerates, deports, and restricts marginalized communities hits home. Somos más que un estatus y queremos equidad. Gracias a todos que marcharon y a @chirla_org for all of the work and organizing! ✊🏽
